Rise of Women in Audio: Spotify Passing the Mic to Thai artists

Female artists on Spotify's EQUAL Thailand see a growth of 41% in 2021

In honor of International Women's Day, Spotify is celebrating the one-year anniversary of EQUAL, a program committed to fostering equity for women in the music industry, and sharing their work with the world.

EQUAL Thailand continues to make waves locally and globally as it spotlights fresh tracks from Thai female artists, with the artists seeing a growth of 41% in listenership in 2021. To celebrate EQUAL's one-year anniversary, EQUAL Thailand's March Artist of the Month Pyra also shared her journey on Spotify's Love Stories podcast.

Bridging the Equity Gap for Women in Audio

Thai women artists are integral to the growth of the local music industry, and Spotify continues to champion these innovative artists to express themselves, as well as enable listeners to discover and support new artists and their work.

Local female artists now enjoy a third of the share on Thailand's annual Top 200 songs list. More broadly, Thai female artists also make up a third of Spotify's total audio stream share in Thailand.

"Giving Thai artists a platform for their voices and passion has always been our driving force, and the artists we listen to should reflect the diversity of the world we live in. Spotify is committed to being a driver of progress, both on and off the platform." said Kossy Ng, Spotify Asia's Head of Music.

Thai Female Artists Reach International Dreams on Spotify

Thai female artists continue to be a regular part of EQUAL, empowering artists like Pyra, Violette Wautier, Tai Orathai, BOWKYLION and Ink Waruntorn to reach new local and global audiences through various playlists and marketing activities.

To celebrate International Women's Day with Spotify, EQUAL Thailand's March Ambassador of the Month Pyra read a letter written to her younger self on the Love Stories podcast: "Remember that time we went to New York Times Square, and you're picturing yourself on those billboards? We're actually there now. And the dream doesn't end here".

Pyra further reminisced on what drove her, sharing, "I will always carry that little nine-year-old version of myself with me, so that I am always reminded to dare to dream and to keep her forever proud. With platforms like Spotify making an intentional commitment to champion gender equity, it generates more opportunities for our work to be seen and heard on the local and global stage."

"To all the women who are listening, I want you to be brave. To stand up for yourself. Because an impact is a ripple effect; once it starts, its momentum will go on", said Pyra.
