eBay Signs MOU with Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (GIT), Expands its Commitment to Helping Thai Gem and Jewelry SMEs to Succeed in the Global Marketplace

eBay, a global ecommerce leader that connects millions of buyers and sellers around the world, announced it has formed a partnership with the Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (GIT) to build confidence in authentic Thai gem and jewelry products among buyers worldwide. eBay is also encouraging Thai SMEs to open online shops on its marketplace platform where more than 4.2 million fine jewelry items were sold over the last year.

Mr. Vidmay Naini, Country Manager of eBay for Southeast Asia and India, said, "Gem and Jewelry has been the top category for our Thai sellers who made sales to global consumers via eBay. We are truly delighted that today is a remarkable milestone for Thailand's gem and jewelry industry as we partner with the Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand. Through the Buy with Confidence program, we will for sure take Thai gem and jewelry products to another level of confidence among the 138 million global buyers on eBay, which will help accelerate sales growth for Thai sellers. And, with the eBay NextGen campaign, we offer many great benefits to any Thai jewelry SMEs who open an online store on our platform."

Mr. Sumed Prasongpongchai, Director of The Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (GIT), said, "The gem and jewelry industry is important to Thailand's economy and trade. The industry has been expanding continuously, which can be seen from the export figures from the beginning of 2022 to the present. The volume of Thai gem and jewelry exports from January to July 2022 accounted for 9,778.97 million US dollars, representing growth of 76.33% when compared to the same period last year, which was 5,545.84 million US dollars, and reaching number three, or 5.66%, of the country's export volume. However, the actual export value was 4,439.67 million US dollars after deducting the unformed gold export value, an increase of 36.16% compared to the same period last year. The main export markets for Thailand are USA, India, Hong Kong, Germany, and the United Kingdom, with a continuous growth rate every year. In addition, online channels are becoming very popular with an interesting growth rate."

eBay - Jewelry by the numbers

eBay has seen tremendous growth in demand for products from all around the world. The eBay platform now reaches 138 million active buyers across 190 countries. For the jewelry category, on average, there are 7.8 million fine jewelry listings on eBay every day with eight fine jewelry items sold every minute. Last year, over 4.2 million fine jewelry items were sold on eBay. Thailand is one of the top five countries for the gem and jewelry segment on eBay, with buyers mainly from the USA, Germany, the UK, Australia, Canada, France, Italy, and Spain.

As gem and jewelry items are considered high-value merchandise, buyers sometimes are uncomfortable as they don't get to see the actual items before purchasing them. The partnership between eBay and GIT will not only reinforce confidence in the authenticity and quality of Thai gem and jewelry products among buyers from around the world, but also gives Thai SMEs more opportunities to benefit from business development activities and campaign promotions to become a global gem and jewelry retailer.

eBay will also help Thai SMEs selling gem and jewelry products to grow their online businesses quickly with the eBay NextGen Campaign. It offers a range of benefits for new SME sellers including:

  • Dedicated account managers to provide support and category insights to identify opportunities in the marketplace.
  • Seller campaigns for jewelry brand owners.
  • Access to an ecosystem with localized, market-specific shipping, web, and listing tools.
  • A new seller subsidies package worth up to US $1,500 per seller.
