The unexplored mountainous terrain and lush tropical abundance of Chiang Rai offer travellers a unique opportunity to connect deeply with the natural beauty and restorative power of Northern Thailand. "Guests immediately feel a special bond with the environment," shares Paweena Waraha, Camp Manager at Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle. Dedicated to creating transformative experiences, Paweena and her team emphasize the benefits of combining physical activity with mindfulness practices such as Forest Bathing - immersing oneself in the forest atmosphere for holistic well-being. This practice, known in Japan as Shinrin-yoku, complements the mindful hiking trails that not only showcase the region's stunning landscapes but also provide intimate encounters with its rich cultural tapestry. "Our guests who cherish the outdoors relish the variety of our trails, which offer both serene forest bathing spots and culturally rich routes, allowing a deeper connection with both nature and the local communities," highlights Paweena, reflecting on her favourite offerings that fuse nature's tranquillity with cultural exploration.
Wang Lao Hike: This two-hour hike begins in the charming village of Wang Lao and guides hikers through lush jungle paths and terraced rice fields, providing breathtaking panoramic views of the Golden Triangle. "As you navigate this path, you'll encounter the unique northern hill architecture and learn about the local flora, including wild herbs and forest plants that are integral to the region's culture," she shares. "One of the highlights is the enchanting bamboo tunnel, which offers a moment of introspection and connection with nature."
Huay Mark Liam Trail: Winding past rugged bamboo forests and tea and agricultural plantations, guests can spend time at the gushing waterfall before continuing past the Ban Ja Jor, a Lahu hill-tribe village that lives in typical bamboo houses, and end at the perfect resting place to enjoy a picnic lunch. "The Huay Mark Liam National Park is a sight to behold!" smiles Paweena. "The rugged beauty of the bamboo forests and the serenity of the waterfall provide a perfect setting for mindfulness and reflection."
Likhai Trail: Beginning at Akha village, this scenic trail cuts through the terraced fields of Mae Chan and into the steep forested hills beyond. "This is a challenging route that takes off alongside the Naglae waterfall and is preferred by enthusiasts for the variety of landscapes traversed, and the stunning vistas it offers," observes the Camp Manager.
Doi Mae Salong Chinese Village and Tea Plantation: During this hike, guests can experience the unique way of life in a traditional Chinese village that has settled here for generations. While the Camp Guides reveal the fascinating political history of the region, "You drive through the gorgeous mountain scenery and learn about the traditional oolong tea that has been adapted to this high-elevation setting," adds Paweena.
As each of these hiking trails offers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural immersion, and opportunities for mindfulness, the Camp team is committed to ensure that guests harness the very best that the destination has to offer. "Whether it's the captivating Wang Lao Hike, the culturally rich Doi Mae Salong experience, the serene Huay Mark Liam Trail, or the challenging Likhai Trail, each path provides a transformative journey towards inner peace," admits Paweena. "Explore these trails to truly embrace the tranquillity and rejuvenation that the Golden Triangle region has to offer."
