Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Company Limited (CP Foods) has won the Supreme Winner Award and the Gold Award the Food and Beverage Packaging category at The 5th Thailand Plastics Awards 2024. The recognition is for their fresh chicken egg tray packaging made from 100% recycled plastic, which includes up to 55% PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled) plastic. The award was received from Kriangkrai Thiennukul, President of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI). This achievement reflects CP Foods' commitment to creating environmentally friendly innovations and promoting the circular economy.
Kitti Wangwiwatsilp, Director of Packaging Research & Development at CP Foods, stated that the company's fresh egg tray packaging is made from 100% recycled PET plastic, containing up to 55% PCR plastic recycled from post-consumer use. This initiative helps reduce plastic waste and conserves natural resources otherwise used in producing new plastics.
In addition to using eco-friendly materials, CP Foods has designed the packaging to facilitate easier waste separation for recycling. They use inserted paper labels inside the packaging instead of adhesive plastic stickers, reducing contamination and enhancing the efficiency of the recycling process.
Consumers can now purchase eggs packaged in 100% recycled plastic trays at stores nationwide, with no price increase. This move encourages consumer participation in reducing pollution and supports sustainable resource use.
CP Foods' recycled plastic packaging has been quality-tested and safety-certified by externally accredited laboratories. This ensures that the recycled plastic materials used in producing fresh egg packaging are safe and do not affect food quality.
"Using fresh egg trays made from recycled plastic not only reduces plastic waste but also lowers greenhouse gas emissions from the production process. Recycled plastic materials have a lower carbon footprint compared to new plastic resins. We can reduce carbon emissions by up to 29%," added Mr. Kitti.
"The 5th Thailand Plastics Awards 2024" aims to promote product design based on the principles of the circular economy, emphasizing the 3R concept (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). It encourages entrepreneurs to recognize the importance of reducing plastic pollution impacting the environment and promotes the development of innovations that add value to the plastics industry.
