Artistic Highlights at "DRIVEN"
Pratuang Emjaroen: "UNIVERSAL LOVERS (1994) / Oil on Canvas
'This painting was published in "Spirit of Arts" book, showing the vast universe stretching on endlessly. As millions of stars collapse and explode, giving birth to new streams of celestia; bodies, amidst the scattered chaos and solitude, the force of the universe draws lovers together. Pratuang captures the beauty of this abstract phenomenon with a pairing of vibrant colors. The intricate lines emphasize the powerful exchange between the stars. When compared to the journey of thousands of light years, human life is as fleeting as the light of a shooting star passing through the sky, Yet, in that brief moment, our love has found its way.'
Thawan Duchanee: "FISHING BOAT" (1967) / Oil on Canvas
'The complex, powerful lines and subdued blue tones evoke the silence and mystery of the sea. The abstract image of a boat, set against a backdrop of gently shifting green and blue hues, is rich with emotion. The interplay of light and shadow captures the rhythm of moving waves, rendered with a palette knife in interwoven geometric shapes reminiscent of Cubism. This significant work was displayed in the dining room of JUSMAGTHAI during the Vietnam War, making it a rare piece that showcases clear Western influences, created at a time when Thawan had just completed his studies abroad.'
Damrong Wong-uparaj: "GOLDEN MOUNT" (1961) / Oil on Board
'This rare and significant piece by Damrong, radiant like a beautiful diamond, was created during the period when the artist won the National Art Competition. The painting showcases exquisite details through various elements, including woven wood textures, wall panel patterns, and meticulously rendered, realistic roof surfaces. It depicts Phu Khao Thong (Golden Mountain), capturing the beauty of Thai architecture and lifestyle as envisioned by the artist. With a vertical perspective typical of modern art, it reflects the interconnectedness of life and religious faith.'
Thawan Duchanee: "Fish" (1967) / Ink on Paper
'A pivotal period in Thawan Duchanee's life, which shaped many of his renowned works, was his time studying in Amsterdam. Dining on a lavish meal at a restaurant was merely a dream back then. Yet, through his artistic talent, he could bring the world of his imagination to life in his paintings. With both hands spread out, it was as if he presented himself as the one who had stripped the fish clean, leaving only the bones behind."
Chatchai Puipia: "UNTITLED" (2013): Oil on Canvas
'Nature, time, the changing seasons and the cycles of human life-birth, encounters, and farewells are central themes in Chatchai Puipia's work. He delves into solitude and the quest for self-awareness, reflecting thoughts and emotions through serene facial expressions and a thoughtful use of color. Butterflies flutter and dance, symbolizing human change and growth. By understanding and embracing the ordinary, we ultimately return to the dust.'
Chakrabhand Posayakrit: "Phra Phuttha Maha Paraminupap Phisutthasankhamawichai" (2010), "Phra Phuttha Maha Paraminupap Phisutthasankhamawichai" (2014), and "Phra Phuttha Maha Vajiravudh Anuson" (2013) / Resin
'Chakrabhand's remarkable talent across various artistic disciplines is clearly recognized within the contemporary Thai art circles. He has been entrusted with the design and oversight of casting Buddha statues for important occasions, including 1) Phra Phuttha Maha Paraminupap Phisutthasankhamawichai, depicted in the Maravijaya posture, which serves as the principal image for "Taleng Phai" puppet performance; 2) Phra Phuttha Maha Paraminupap Phisutthasankhamawichai, designed for the 80th anniversary of the Faculty of Veterinary Science, the Chulalongkorn University. This Buddha statue, also shown in the Maravijaya attitude, sits cross-legged on a lotus pedestal; and 3) Phra Phuttha Maha Vajiravudh Anuson, created for the centenary of the Vajiravudh College. It is the meditation attitude.'
MUEBON: "WHAAM!" (2022) / Acrylic, Gouache and Spray Paint on Linen
'This artwork cleverly criticizes Pop Art through a playful comic cartoon. An army of adorable little birds acts as philosophical rebels questioning the nature of contemporary art in our era of cultural appreciation. It explores the origins of ideas in artworks that are accessible to all. But is this simply an appropriation of existentialism to elevate consumerism, labeling it as high arts while replacing facts with constructed beliefs to create a distorted reality? MUEBON references Pop Art icons in his piece, both honoring their legacy and provoking thought.'
Thongmai Thepram: "WHERE DID WE COME FROM? WHY WERE WE BORN? WHERE ARE WE GOING?" (2022) / Acrylic and Pencil on Linen
'Thongmai's large contemporary paintings explore profound questions and reflections on life, depicted through the journey of animal characters. His distinctive use of bright, vibrant colors and shading create striking dimensionality in his works. Central to his art is the integration of Buddhist principles, illustrating life's progression along its path. While
some people are illuminated by wisdom and guided by the light of enlightenment, there are others lost and wandering in darkness. However, once they choose to remove the veil that blinds them, they will be able to finally see with clarity.'
Gongkan or Kantapon Metheekul: "SHADE OF SUMMER" (2019): Acrylic on Canvas
'The past, present, and future are streams intertwined long before humanity understood time, and they will continue to flow even as the end draws near. In a world spinning under the weight of a competitive society, time's law remains the ultimate force. The past lives on as memory, the present unfolds as reality, and the future holds hope. Gongkan expresses this concept through his signature lines and warm sky tones, introducing a rare appearance of a female character in his work.'
Prayoon Uluchadcha: "BOY" (1996): Pastel on Paper
'The brush tip applies colors using the Pointilism technique, creating a sense of dimension through varying distances and blending impressionism with abstraction. This approach amplifies the emotional intensity of the image. The background moves hazily, resembling a dream, shimmering with light scattered through a prism. The figure of a boy embodies a reality that is both connected to and separate from the surrounding world, reflecting the innocence of youth when life's stories remain to be understood.'
On top of these highlights are prominent artworks by top artists, each with distinctive style and sharp perspectives. For example, exhibits at the event include Sompot Upa-in's "TRIO", Pratuang Emjaroen's "Natural Phenomenon", Kitti Narod's "LONDON BRIDGES", Prayat Pongdam's "LOY KRATONG (River Goddess Worship Ceremony)" and Tawee Nandakwang's "BIRD OF PARADISE".
All these masterpieces are meaningful and intriguing. And they are waiting for you to explore and admire up close.
"DRIVEN"
'In igniting the engine of life, whether in arts or automobiles, everything begins with a spark - the driving force that propels us towards our destination. Like the oil that nourishes an engine, the life and soul artists pour into their work fuel viewers on a journey to seek answers. These answers appear not only like a mirror in the sky but also in the reflection on the canvas. Every distance traveled and every turn negotiated reveals the true value of a journey that will leave no regrets.
The automotive genius of the future world progresses alongside reflections of the past. Innovation transmits historical legacy to move forward. A classic yet modern appearance combines timeless elegance with cutting-edge technology. As seasons cycle, art that evolves and challenges traditions retains some aspects from previous eras. Traditional and modern art are intertwined by threads that transcend defined time boundaries, shaping and completing stories, manifesting as a complete big picture.
When every piston ignites, the gauge sweeps to show engine revolutions, signaling an awakening of power in the mind, ready to propel the driver steadily through the air. Let the wind blow through, liberating the spirit that loves speed and art. Whether it's the elegant curves of a Porsche or brush strokes that swept across a canvas, the roar of an engine or the admiration of a masterpiece, these things open opportunities for you to embark on a journey and discover new horizons. What's important is not the top speed a vehicle can achieve or the monetary value of art but the value of the surrounding stories that fuse drivers and collectors through time. This opens up a worldview to complete the experience of this journey, along with the pleasure derived from the driving force that pushes us to our destination.'
