Pol. Maj. Gen. Surached Bundit, Commander of the Traffic Police Division, stated that during the New Year festival, many people travel to their hometowns using private cars and public transportation. This results in a significant increase in traffic congestion and a higher risk of accidents. To address this, the Traffic Police Division, responsible for traffic management in Bangkok, has implemented measures to facilitate traffic flow by providing support at public transport stations and areas with heavy traffic. Additionally, the Traffic Police Division has initiated the "Pre-Use Vehicle Inspection Project, Safe Along the Route" to ensure the readiness of 10 critical vehicle components necessary for long-distance driving. This service is available free of charge to the general public at the Engine Mechanics Unit, Inspection Division 5, Traffic Police Division, Prasan Ratchakit Building, Vibhavadi Rangsit Road, Lat Yao Subdistrict, Chatuchak District, Bangkok.
This year, the Traffic Police Division has received support from BRAND'S Essence of Chicken for their safe driving campaign through the project "Brain Fatigue, Don't Drive, Take a Break and Drink BRAND'S". This initiative aims to benefit drivers traveling long distances in heavy traffic, who may experience fatigue, exhaustion, and drowsiness, which can lead to accidents. BRAND'S Essence of Chicken encourages product consumption to increase alertness, promoting mindfulness and readiness among drivers, thereby helping to reduce the chances of accidents due to fatigue or falling asleep while driving.
According to Pol. Maj. Gen. Surached Bundit, Commander of the Traffic Police Division, accidents during festivals are often caused by various factors. These include drunk driving, exceeding the legal speed limit, and unprepared vehicle conditions due to insufficient maintenance or lack of inspection on components such as brakes, tires, or headlights. These issues can lead to problems, particularly during long journeys. Additionally, drivers not adhering to traffic laws, such as failing to wear helmets, using phones while driving, or ignoring traffic signals, and fatigue caused by long-distance driving also contribute significantly to accidents.
Pol. Maj. Gen. Kongkrid Lertsittikul, Commander of the Highway Police Division, announced that the Highway Police are prepared to support the public during the New Year 2025 celebrations by deploying personnel, equipment, and vehicles, while utilizing lessons learned from the previous year to enhance their operations. Additionally, they have instructed units to arrange complimentary accommodation for the public at 205 Highway Police service units nationwide. Individuals feeling drowsy can contact the unit for immediate lodging.
For traffic management in the New Year, the Highway Police have established a traffic management center supervised by a deputy commander. Utilizing an IT system and CCTV cameras, the center analyzes traffic to provide a comprehensive overview, facilitating orders to prepare units for action. The center focuses on preemptively addressing issues before congestion occurs and implements special lanes to alleviate traffic jams.
"The Highway Police have prepared measures to ensure citizens' safety this New Year. Citizens are encouraged to inspect their vehicles and ensure they are physically prepared for travel. Avoid driving under the influence or while drowsy. Additionally, plan your journey by checking traffic conditions along your intended route. Determine the optimal travel time and consider alternative routes if necessary. Stay informed with traffic updates and live broadcasts available on the Highway Police page."
