A Year of Unforgettable Festivals in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai celebrates life, culture, and tradition in the most vibrant ways. Every month, a unique festival or event invites locals and visitors to experience the city's enchanting spirit, whether is it a stunning display of local craft, the natural abundance of flowers, the delectable cuisine or art. "Chiang Mai has always been the seat of culture and tradition in Thailand," says Ashok Nair, Director of Rooms & Residences, who - together with his concierge team - curates personalised tours and experiences for guests at Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai. "As the seasons change, the celebrations bring travellers and residents together to appreciate the abundance of natural and traditional beauty that this destination has to offer," he adds.

While there are a number of events taking place throughout the year, the resort's team highlights a month-by-month guide to Chiang Mai's most captivating celebrations - guaranteed to make travellers pack their bags and join in the festivities.

January: Bo Sang Umbrella Festival - The year kicks off with a riot of colours in the quaint village of Bo Sang, just 45 minutes from the resort. "The Bo Sang Umbrella Festival showcases the intricate art of hand-painted umbrellas and fans," shares Ashok. "Guests can stroll down the lantern-lined streets adorned with giant parasols, watch artisans create masterpieces live, and enjoy cultural performances and parades." The charm and craftsmanship of this event make it an Instagram dream and a cultural must-see.

February: Chiang Mai Flower Festival - Nothing spells romance and beauty like the Chiang Mai Flower Festival, held every February at Suan Buak Hat Park. Imagine a garden transformed into a wonderland of blossoms, with floats decorated in breathtaking floral arrangements parading through the streets. "Admire the beauty of orchids, marigolds, and roses while enjoying live music, traditional dances, and the crowning of the Flower Queen," Ashok shares. "The city turns into a fragrant, colourful paradise you'll never want to leave."

March: Poy Sang Long Festival - March brings the deeply spiritual Poy Sang Long Festival, a Shan tradition where young boys are ordained as novice monks. The boys, dressed as princes in vibrant, ornate costumes, are carried through the streets on the shoulders of their elders in a joyous procession. The festival is a mix of religious devotion and lively celebration, offering a glimpse into a lesser-known aspect of Northern Thai culture.

April: Songkran (Thai New Year) - "If you've ever dreamed of joining the world's biggest water festival, Songkran in Chiang Mai is your chance!" Ashok smiles. This iconic festival transforms the city into a playground of splashing, laughter, and celebration. Guests can cool off in the heat as locals and tourists join in dousing each other with water, symbolising cleansing, and renewal. Traditional rituals, such as bathing Buddha statues and visiting temples, add a spiritual touch to the exuberance.

May: Visakha Bucha Day - May's highlight is Visakha Bucha Day, one of the most important days in Buddhism. In Chiang Mai, the pinnacle of this celebration is a candlelit procession up the sacred steps to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. "Imagine thousands of devotees walking together under a canopy of stars, their candles flickering like fireflies," says Ashok. "The serenity and reverence of this event leave a lasting impression on the heart and soul."

June: Inthakhin Festival - The Inthakhin Festival, or the Festival of the City Pillar, is a week-long event held at Wat Chedi Luang to pray for Chiang Mai's prosperity. Locals present flowers, candles, and incense, creating a mesmerising display of devotion. The evenings are filled with traditional music, dances, and food stalls, making it a wonderful time to connect with the city's spiritual essence and community spirit.

July: Asalha Puja and Buddhist Lent - July is a month of reflection, marked by Asalha Puja and the start of Buddhist Lent. "Witness the devotion of locals as they offer candles and essentials to monks beginning their three-month retreat," Ashok reveals. Temples across the city host beautiful ceremonies, and the calm atmosphere provides a unique opportunity to experience Chiang Mai's spiritual depth.

August to October: Lanna Culture and Craft - As the green season blankets Chiang Mai with its lush, vibrant hues, it is the perfect time to explore the city's art and craft shops. From handwoven textiles and intricate silverware to wooden carvings and delicate pottery, these treasures reflect the region's rich cultural heritage. "Visiting these shops not only allows you to discover unique souvenirs but also offers a chance to learn about the time-honoured art forms that have been passed down through generations, making it a meaningful and inspiring experience," he believes.

November: Yi Peng and Loy Krathong - November is the most magical time of year in Chiang Mai. During Yi Peng, thousands of lanterns rise into the night sky, each carrying a wish or prayer. At the same time, Loy Krathong witnesses people release small, candlelit floats onto rivers and lakes. "Join the celebrations along the Ping River, where the city glows with candles, lanterns, and fireworks," suggests Ashok.

December: Chiang Mai Countdown Festival - End the year with joy and excitement at the Chiang Mai Countdown Festival, a lively event celebrating the arrival of the New Year. Tha Phae Gate becomes a hub for festivities, featuring live music, food stalls, and fireworks lighting up the night sky. The energy is contagious as people from all over the world gather to bid farewell to the past year and welcome the new one with celebrations that last well into the early hours.

"Chiang Mai's year-round calendar of festivals offers something for everyone, from cultural enthusiasts to adventure seekers and romantics," comments Ashok. "Each event immerses you in the city's rich traditions and warm hospitality, leaving you with memories to treasure forever!"
