Resonant Abstractions: D-Jai Kosiyabong Composes a New Language of Sight and Sound to See Sound, Hear Colour

Bangkok, 3 April 2025 ? SAC Gallery is proud to present 'Resonant Abstractions', the eagerly anticipated debut solo exhibition by artist D-Jai Kosiyabong, curated by Miranda K. Metcalf, opening on 3 April and running until 31 May 2025.

In this exhibition, Kosiyabong masterfully interrogates the intersection of visual art, sound, language and memory, creating an immersive multisensory experience that challenges conventional perceptions of communication.

D-Jai Kosiyabong is known in the international art scene for her work in significant group exhibitions, including 'Being Human | Human Being' at Carlsberg Byens Galleri in Copenhagen, Denmark and 'It's Not Me. It's My Image' at Gallery House in Brooklyn, New York, USA.

Her work has garnered widespread interest from art collectors across the United States, Europe, and Asia, reflecting her ability to create art that communicates profoundly across cultural boundaries.

After participating in numerous group exhibitions across Bangkok, this exhibition marks a significant milestone in Kosiyabong's artistic journey. Her distinctive body of work has evolved steadily, culminating in this comprehensive solo debut which represents the first time she has combined sound with paintings, fully realising her artistic vision.

'Resonant Abstractions' features a striking collection of abstract paintings paired with 'sound' that extend beyond traditional artistic boundaries. Kosiyabong's innovative approach transforms linguistic patterns into dynamic visual compositions whilst simultaneously translating these visual elements into layered sound experiences?inviting visitors to 'listen with their eyes and see with their ears.'

At the heart of Kosiyabong's work lies a profound investigation of how we process and articulate our experiences. Drawing inspiration from the culturally embedded nature of language, the exhibition explores how our memories and expressions are shaped by collective linguistic frameworks that carry inherent cultural values.

"The way we use language stems from our memories, as our recollections of past events help us navigate present experiences,"explains the artist.

Yet the words we use to describe our emotions and experiences are predetermined concepts defined by others. Her work reflects on how we must be mindful about our language, where our actions originate, and the subconscious values we perpetuate.

Visitors will encounter meticulously crafted paintings featuring structured mark-making that follows rules reminiscent of written language. These visual elements are then transformed into sound through computational processes, creating sound compositions that mirror the patterns in the paintings. This synthesis forms what Kosiyabong describes as 'a new language'?where paintings become letters, and installations become sentences and conversations unto themselves.

The exhibition's innovative approach to communication transcends conventional boundaries, offering a refreshing perspective on how meaning emerges from the spaces between different forms of expression. Through this carefully orchestrated interplay of painting and sound, Kosiyabong invites us into a realm where language dissolves into pure sensation, encouraging deeper reflection on how we make sense of our world.

'Resonant Abstractions' will be on view from 3 April to 31 May 2025 on the 2nd floor of SAC Gallery.
