UP Confirms Structural Safety of Buildings Following Earthquake, Enhances Emergency Preparedness Measures

In light of the recent earthquake in Thailand, which has greatly impacted various regions, including Phayao Province, the University of Phayao has taken swift action by implementing a thorough inspection protocol for all academic and administrative buildings. This measure aims to guarantee the safety and well-being of students, staff, and visitors.

After the March 28th, 2025 earthquake, Associate Professor Dr. Supakorn Pongbangpho, President of the University of Phayao, promptly issued a directive for a comprehensive assessment of structural damage. The team, headed by Assistant Professor Suwit Panyawong, Vice President for Environment and Landscape, and including Mr. Nattawut Somyarone, Assistant to the President, and Mr. Jeerawat Manngan, Director of the Division of Building and Facilities, conducted evaluations with assistance from the School of Engineering and the Division of Building and Facilities.

On March 31st, 2025, the preliminary report confirmed that all 30 buildings on the university campus were structurally sound. Minor surface cracks were observed, but they do not affect the integrity of the buildings. The inspections followed the Preliminary Damage Assessment Manual for Building Structures After an Earthquake, Department of Public Works and Town & Country Planning, B.E. 2560 (2017), ensuring thorough and standardized evaluations.

Moreover, all building systems, including electrical infrastructure, fire safety systems, and elevator operations, were confirmed to be in proper working condition. The university officially declared that all facilities are safe and fully operational.

The Building and Facilities Division at the University of Phayao has developed a comprehensive plan to improve safety on campus. This plan involves collaborating with the security staff and housekeeping team to prepare for potential summer storms. The team is actively monitoring weather updates, issuing storm warnings, and conducting building inspections throughout the month of April. In addition, efforts are being made to clean the drainage channels across the university to prevent blockages caused by fallen leaves, ensuring that the campus is prepared for any potential storms. The university has also organized a meeting to prepare for emergencies and disasters during the upcoming Songkran holiday from April 12th to 16th, 2025. This meeting will focus on coordinating staff operations, addressing issues with public utilities, and preparing necessary equipment for disaster response. These proactive measures are being taken to ensure the safety of the university's property, students, staff, and visitors during this period.
