SGLS เปิดตัวเมื่อเดือนพฤษภาคม 2535 โดย Ministry of the Environment ที่จัดให้ Green Labelครอบคลุมสินค้าเกือบทุกประเภท ยกเว้น อาหาร เครื่องดื่ม และเภสัชภัณฑ์ ซึ่ง SEC เป็นหน่วยงานที่ดูแลควบคุมโปรแกรม SGLS มีจุดมุ่งหมายในการยกระดับการรักษาธรรมชาติและสภาพแวดล้อมในเขตชุมชน รวมถึงให้คำแนะนำ และอนุมัติออก Green Label ให้กับสินค้าที่ยื่นขอและได้มาตรฐาน Eco Standard
บริษัทสิงคโปร์หรือบริษัทต่างชาติสามารถยื่นขอ Green Label โดยตรงต่อ The Secretariat, Singapore Green Label, Singapore Environment Council (SEC)
