1. China's oilseed imports were likely to display an upward trend in the crop year of 2011-12 beginning from October of last year, said Deng Ruihong, vice-general manager of the vegetable oil research department of the COFCO Group, China's largest grain and oil dealer.
Speaking at a seminar on Tuesday, Deng predicted that the country would import 55 million to 58 million metric tons (tonnes) of soybeans in this crop year, higher than 52.34 million tonnes in the previous crop year.
She also projected that China's rapeseed imports would reach 1.5 to 2 million tonnes in the crop year compared with 930,000 tonnes a year earlier.
Deng predicted that the country's edible oil imports would gain 8 percent year on year to 9 million tonnes in the 2011-12 crop year.
2. China's cotton planting area is expected to fall 16.7 percent year on year in 2012, according to results of the latest survey by the China Cotton Association (CCA).
A report published on the association's website on Tuesday said that of 2,676 farmers being surveyed, about 38 percent prepared to cut cotton acreage this year while 5.4 percent intended to increase the planting area.
The CCA noted that soft cotton prices and mounting cost of labor, fertilizer and seeds dampened some farmers' planting interest.
China usually starts cotton planting from early April and begins to reap the crop from the middle of October.
