"แมทเทล" กำไรหด 1% ในไตรมาส 3 หลังเจอพิษจากการเรียกคืนของเล่น

          แมทเทล อิงค์ บริษัทของเล่นรายใหญ่ของโลกเปิดเผยว่า ผลกำไรของบริษัทลดลง 1% ในไตรมาสที่ 3 อันมีสาเหตุมาจากการเรียกคืนของเล่นหลายครั้งในช่วงไม่กี่เดือนที่ผ่านมา
          รายได้สุทธิของไตรมาสที่ 3 สิ้นสุดวันที่ 30 ก.ย. ลดลงเหลือ 236.8 ล้านดอลลาร์สหรัฐ หรือ 61 เซนต์ต่อหุ้น จากเดิมที่ 239 ล้านดอลลาร์ หรือ 62 เซนต์ต่อหุ้นในช่วงเวลาเดียวกันของปีที่แล้ว ผลประกอบการในไตรมาสดังกล่าวหักค่าเสียหายกว่า 40 ล้านดอลลาร์จากการเรียกคืนของเล่นจากจีนซึ่งปนเปื้อนสารตะกั่วแล้ว
          ยอดขายของบริษัทขยับขึ้น 3% เป็น 1.84 พันล้านดอลลาร์ จาก 1.79 พันล้านดอลลาร์เมื่อปีที่แล้ว โดยได้รับแรงหนุนหลักจากเงินดอลลาร์ที่อ่อนค่าลง
          ผลสำรวจซึ่งจัดทำโดยสำนักข่าวธอมสัน ไฟแนนเชียล เปิดเผยว่า นักวิเคราะห์คาดว่าผลกำไรของบริษัทจะอยู่ที่ 70 เซนต์ต่อหุ้น จากผลประกอบการณ์ทั้งหมด 1.91 พันล้านดอลลาร์ 
          ตั้งแต่เดือนส.ค.ที่ผ่านมา แมทเทลประกาศเรียกคืนของเล่น 3 ครั้ง รวมทั้งหมด 21 ล้านชิ้น เนื่องจากของเล่นดังกล่าวปนเปื้อนสารตะกั่วและมีชิ้นส่วนแม่เหล็กขนาดเล็กซึ่งอาจเป็นอันตรายต่อเด็กได้
          "แม้บริษัทจะเผชิญกับปัญหาในช่วงไตรมาสที่ 3 จนระบบซัพพลายเชนเกิดความปั่นป่วนและส่งผลกระทบต่อยอดขาย แต่เราก็ผ่านพ้นมาได้ด้วยดี" โรเบิร์ต เอ เอ็คเคิร์ท ประธานและหัวหน้าผู้บริหารกล่าว "ตุ๊กตาบาร์บี้ยังคงขายได้เรื่อยๆในสหรัฐ แม้ยอดขายจะลดลงเพราะได้รับผลกระทบโดยตรงจากระบบซัพพลายเชนก็ตาม"          
          นายเอ็คเคิร์ทกล่าวว่า ยอดขายทั่วโลกยังคงขยายตัวอย่างต่อเนื่อง ในขณะที่ยอดขายในสหรัฐลดลงเล็กน้อยในไตรมาสดังกล่าว อย่างไรก็ตาม ของเล่นในเครือฟิชเชอร์-ไพรซ์ และของเล่นจากภาพยนตร์เรื่อง "Cars" ของดิสนีย์-พิกซาร์ ก็ยังขายได้มากเหมือนเดิม สำนักข่าวเอพีรายงาน
          Mattel posts 1 percent drop in profits
          EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) -           Toy maker Mattel Inc.  reported a 1 percent drop in fiscal third-quarter profit, due to charges related to multiple product recalls.
          Net income for the quarter ended Sept. 30 slipped to $236.8 million, or 61 cents per share, from $239 million, or 62 cents per share, in the year-ago period. Latest-quarter results included charges of about $40 million related to the company's product recalls covering lead-tainted merchandise imported from China.
          Sales rose 3 percent to $1.84 billion from $1.79 billion a year ago, mainly helped by the weaker dollar.
          Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial had expected profit of 70 cents per share on revenue of $1.91 billion.
          Since August, Mattel has announced three separate recalls of some 21 million toys because of dangers to children from lead paint or from tiny magnets that can be harmful if swallowed.
          "Despite the challenges the company faced during the third quarter, the business has performed fairly well, even with some supply chain disruptions that impacted our sales during the quarter," said Robert A. Eckert, chairman and chief executive. "U.S. Barbie performance was soft and remains an area of focus, although a good portion of the decline in the quarter was directly related to the supply chain disruptions."
          Eckert said international sales have continued to drive growth, while the U.S. was down slightly in the quarter. Mattel did say, however, that it saw continued strong performance from its core Fisher-Price and Disney/Pixar Cars properties.
