ตามที่เกิดเหตุการณ์แผ่นดินไหวใกล้กับเมืองโบโลญญา ทางตอนเหนือของสาธารณรัฐอิตาลี เมื่อวันที่ ๒๐ พฤษภาคม ๒๕๕๕ ส่งผลให้มีผู้เสียชีวิตและบาดเจ็บจำนวนหนึ่ง ตลอดจนสร้างความเสียหายต่อสถานที่สำคัญทางวัฒนธรรมในแคว้นเอมิเลีย โรมาญญา (Emilia Romagna) นั้น
ในการนี้ นางสาวยิ่งลักษณ์ ชินวัตร นายกรัฐมนตรี ได้มีข้อความสารแสดงความเสียใจถึงนาย Mario Monti นายกรัฐมนตรีอิตาลี และนายสุรพงษ์ โตวิจักษณ์ชัยกุล รัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงการต่างประเทศได้มีข้อความสารแสดงความเสียใจถึงนาย Giulio Terzi รัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงการต่างประเทศอิตาลีต่อเหตุการณ์ดังกล่าว ดังนี้

I am deeply saddened upon learning that the Northern part of Italy was struck by an earthquake, causing loss of lives and massive damage to properties and cultural heritage in several towns.

I am confident that, with the spirit of solidarity and the resilience of the peoples of Italy, the affected areas will soon be restored.
