ตามที่ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกาได้รับผลกระทบจากพายุเฮอร์ริเคนแซนดี้ในสัปดาห์ที่ผ่านมา นายสุรพงษ์ โตวิจักษณ์ชัยกุล รองนายกรัฐมนตรีและรัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงการต่างประเทศ ได้มีหนังสือแสดงความเสียใจถึงนางฮิลลารี รอดแฮม คลินตัน รัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงการต่างประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา เมื่อวันที่ ๓๑ ตุลาคม ๒๕๕๕ โดยมีข้อความดังนี้

“Madam Secretary,
I have followed with grave concern the deadly trail of destruction and losses in lives and properties caused by Hurricane Sandy along the East Coast of the United States, including New York City. Please be assured that in this difficult time, the hearts and minds of the Government and people of Thailand are with the Government and people of the United States, particularly the families and love ones of those who lost their lives and belongings.
We still remember and deeply appreciate the assistance of the Government and people of the United States in the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami and during the devastating floods last year. It is our sincerest hope that our friends in the United States safely overcome the challenges brought about by Hurricane Sandy. We are confident that the strong American courage and solidarity will again prevail over this latest calamity of Mother Nature and bring about a rapid recovery.
As there are sizeable Thai communities in New York City and along the East Coast of the United States, the effects of Hurricane Sandy also resonate deeply with us. I have instructed the Royal Thai Consulate-General in New York and the Royal Thai Embassy in Washington DC to work closely with the US authorities concerned to render assistance and safeguard the welfare of any Thai nationals in the affected area.
