พลเอก ประยุทธ์ จันทร์โอชา นายกรัฐมนตรี ได้มีสารถึงนายชินโซ อาเบะ นายกรัฐมนตรีญี่ปุ่น เพื่อแสดงความเสียใจในนามของประชาชนชาวไทย ต่อรัฐบาลและประชาชนญี่ปุ่นที่ประสบความสูญเสียจากเหตุแผ่นดินไหว และหวังว่าผู้ได้รับผลกระทบจะสามารถกลับคืนสู่สภาวะปกติได้โดยเร็ว โดยรัฐบาลไทยพร้อมให้ความช่วยเหลือกับญี่ปุ่นอย่างเต็มที่ ดังปรากฏรายละเอียดตามข้อความ ดังนี้
The news of devastated earthquakes in Kumamoto Prefecture has saddened the people of Thailand and myself. On behalf of the people and the Government of Thailand, I am conveying our deepest sympathies to your Government and the people of Japan for the sudden losses caused by such frightening disaster.
Our prayers go to the people of Kumamoto and the affected areas with a profound hope that they all could wholly recover and resume shortly their normal lives. My Government stands fully ready to be of assistance should Japan require any from us at this difficult time.
