I was deeply saddened to learn of the loss of life and casualties caused by the powerful earthquakes in Sumatra on 30 September and 1 October 2009, which affected thousands of people and inflicted massive property damage.
On behalf of the Government and people of Thailand, I wish to extend my heartfelt sympathy and condolences to you and to the bereaved families of the victims of this tragic disaster, and hope for the speedy recovery of the injured. I am confident that, under your strong leadership, the rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts will be carried out effectively and the affected areas will return to normalcy soon. Let me assure you that Thailand stands ready to do its utmost in rendering any assistance that Indonesia may require.
