On 4th May 2007, the European Union (EU) Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson and the trade ministers of the ten members of Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) agreed to launch negotiations on a wide-ranging pact that is expected to boost two-way trade and investment between the two regions. This new generation of WTO-compatible free trade agreement aims at complementing the strong commitment to the multilateral trading system by focusing on areas not currently covered by WTO rules such as investment, trade in certain services and the removal of non-tariff barriers. It is expected to improve competitiveness and growth between the two regions as well as support further integration of partner countries into the international trade system.
