Rolls-Royce announced today that THAI Airways International has selected the Trent 900 to power its fleet of six Airbus A380s in a deal valued at $500 million at engine list prices.
The aircrafts are due to be delivered from late 2010 onwards, and the engines will be backed by a long-term, TotalCare services agreement, based on an agreed dollar fee per engine flying hour.
The Trent 900 will become the fourth member of the Trent family to join the THAI Airways International fleet. THAI was the launch customer for the Trent 800 for both its Boeing 777—200 and —300 versions and has 20 aircraft in its fleet which also includes the Trent-powered 777—200ER version. The airline also operates the Trent 500, supported by a TotalCare agreement on 10 Airbus A340-500 and —600s.
Khun Tummasak, Executive Vice President, Technical at THAI, said: “Rolls-Royce has become a key partner in our fleet expansion, providing the highest levels of support and understanding of our operation, and we look forward to extending this relationship with this Trent 900 order.”
Dan Pedley, Managing Director of Rolls-Royce Thailand, commented: “THAI’s decision to welcome the Trent 900 into its fleet not only shows the strength of our relationship but highlights the market-leading performance of each successive generation of the Trent family.”
Thailand has been, and continues to be, a key market for Rolls-Royce, as about 25% of the value of Asian orders in the company’s 2008 order book come from airlines in Thailand. This includes THAI’s decision in January to select the Rolls-Royce Trent 700 to power their new fleet of A330s, including TotalCare contract, followed in February by Bangkok Airways’ orders for up to 6 Airbus A350 XWB aircrafts, to be powered by the Trent XWB engines.
Today, there are well over 100 Rolls-Royce engines in use by airlines based in the kingdom.
The Trent 900 is the only engine currently in-service on the Airbus A380 and has now been selected by ten of the thirteen operators who have made engine selections on their A380s. Since entering commercial operation in October 2007, the Trent 900 fleet has accumulated more than 18,000 hours of flawless operation.
Notes to editors:
1. Ten of the 13 operators who have made engine selections on their A380s have chosen the Trent 900, resulting in a market-leading 58 per cent share of firm and option orders.

TotalCare can remove uncertainties from engine management and improve operational reliability for operators through a mutually aligned business relationship. Since 2001, 80 per cent of new Trent orders have included TotalCare.
